Hollyford Track - 3 Day Walk

Hollyford Track - 3 Day Walk
Stunning Scenery

In the first week of April 2013 I experienced the Hollyford track – a three day walk that included an exciting jet boat ride which eliminated a tedious and “unscenic” part of the regular track, and culminated with a splendid helicopter ride that took us from the ocean into Milford Sound passing Mitre Peak on the way.

The trip was seamless insofar as we were picked up and dropped off from my hotel in Queenstown.  Hiking gear is provided if you wish, all I had to bring was my clothes, toiletries, my camera, and sunscreen (which I needed!).

The lodges were first class, they even provide hot water bottles (not needed), and the cuisine spectacular (venison one night, fresh salmon the other), and evening discussion over a glass of wine by the fire capped it off.

And yes, there’s a wee bit of scenery if that interests you.  We hiked from the start of the Hollyford valley to the sea through native forests, including dramatic waterfalls, surrounded by spectacular mountains. The final day is spent at Martin’s Bay providing a stunning contrast to the two days inland.

The guides were very friendly, customer oriented and had impressive knowledge of the area, including its history and fauna.  Without them, it would be much less of an experience.  This is not a difficult hike, suitable for all ages. Most of the group of 14 traveled in pairs, I hiked alone but soon had 13 friends.
